According to Roland Barthes, in “The Third Meaning”, there are different levels to abstract from an image:

Informational LevelSymbolic LevelObtuse Meaning

Once structure is created with the informational and symbolic levels, locate obtuse meaning and map it by using a tonal study.  The gradient in the tonal study informs the viewer of the intensity of emotion suspended between the structure, thus, recreating the modality of the image.

The above final diagrams are architectural diagramatic representations of the modality of the image to which they belong; it is ‘process’ towards creating spatial conditions of the “emotion-value” that I found “suspended between the image(s) and (their) description(s), between definition and approximation” (Barthes).

INTENTION

The next step in my process towards creating spatial conditions from the analysis of images”The Mother” and “The Child” is to become more aware of the “emotion-value” that I specifically experienced, and, to organize, order and direct it for an architectural intent.

What drew me closer to pick these specific images?  I took a screen shot of more than fifty stills from the movie, and I chose to uncover the mother and the child.  Though the protagonists and their surroundings in these images differ vastly from each other, the mother being inside a room and the child being in an open field, they share a certain mood, the way in which both of them seem introspective, in solitude, in worrisome or sadness.  They share a certain darkness, somewhere in between their body posture and their hidden facial expression, completely refuged from an opposing force manifested in the light of their surroundings.  It is in the awareness of this “emotion-value” that my architectural intent emerges.

CONCLUSION

Ultimately, the architectural representations are spaces where the obtuse meaning created from the film diagrams is reinforced.

“Obtuse meanings are to be found not everywhere, but somewhere: in a certain manner of reading ‘life’ and so ‘reality’ itself”

-Roland Barthes
